Opportunity for entrepreneurial PhD in Europe

Traditional social science research topics are boring and mundane. Few have real-world impact and even fewer challenge the status quo.

This is why we my university, along with eight other universities just launched a new international doctorate – Law, Science and Technology Joint Doctorate: Rights of the Internet of Everything (LAST-JD-RIoE). LAST-JD-RIoE is a 3-Year PhD Program funded by a research grant from the EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.

Applications are open to for international students wishing to pursue an entrepreneurial research career in Europe.

Tentative topics that I would personally encourage in the context of the sweeping themes of the LAST-JD-RIoE program:

  • Reconciling AdTech and the GDPR- new internet advertising models;
  • Digital content business models after the EU copyright reforms;
  • Regulatory sandboxes for technological innovation.

In order to apply for the positions, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements at the deadline of this call for applications:

  • be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers (the four years start to count from the date when a researcher obtained the degree which would formally entitle him/her to embark on a doctorate);
  • have not been awarded a doctoral degree;
  • have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) outside the country of the beneficiary university for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately.

What we promise – scientific freedom, honest scientific challenge and feedback, mentoring for your ideas and ambition, opportunity to interact with real-world businesses and decisionmakers, opportunities to turn your ideas into life and early-stage funding to turn your research into business if you have the ambition, and of course – comfortable office space, extensive library, vibrant city life.

The program offers a total of 15 PhD positions and you will have a possibility to visit leading research universities: University of Bologna (UNIBO), Mykolas Romeris University (MRU), University Turin (UNITO), University Luxembourg (UL), the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), KU Leuven (KUL), Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH), Universität Wien (UNIVIEN).
